Suicides are globally almost twice as more common among males than in females. However, in Afghanistan around 80% of the total suicide attempts (n =3000) are done by women. The same fact is supported by an official strategy report by the government of Afghanistan (GoA) which shows that majority of the victims of self-immolation were females (95%) between the ages of 14–19.3 The most important factors for this disparity are the gender-based violence (GBV) against women, forced marriages, lack of awareness of women’s rights, the impact of the war, and family violence. The most common methods of suicide in Afghanistan are self-immolation, hanging, drug overdose, and consuming chemicals such as detergent. Based on the numbers given by United Nations Population Fund, around 87% of women have been a victim of at least one form of sexual, physical, or psychological violence, and 62% have faced multiple forms of abuse. At RAO university we provide an opportunity to solve the minimum percentage of this problem by contacting with our advisors.
Take Care of Yourself
If you are thinking of ending your life or hurting yourself, there is hope. Things can get better. Start with these two things.
1. Call someone who can help you
Call Counseling or a friend who can help you.
2. Reach out to the people around you.
Reach out to the people closest to you. It may feel as if there is no one available, but you are not alone. You have people who love and care for you. Reach out to them. If you believe you cannot talk to your parents, find someone else: a relative, a roommate, a friend, a professor, an advisor or a mentor.
Help Someone Else
Students in emotional distress are more likely to approach friends before they speak with a professional. If a friend sends out signs of distress, either in person or via social media, take it seriously and follow up with them. Start with these three steps.
1. Call someone who can help you
Call Counseling or your friend who can help you.
2. Learn to recognize the warning signs
Fifty to 75 percent of all suicide victims give some warning signs of their intentions in the week before. The person may display overt signs like threatening to hurt or kill themselves or more subtle signs like writing about death and dying. Learn to recognize the warning signs.
